“The Best of Maui” 2014

Aloha!

Every year, the Maui News (www. mauinews.com) runs the “Best of Maui”, billed as “Your guide to Maui’s premier restaurants, activities, and more…” and voted on by Maui’s own residents and visitors alike.

The 2014 Results are In!

Honorable Mentions:
Migrant
Wailea Beach Marriott
3700 Wailea Alanui Dr.
Wailea. 875-9384

Morimoto Maui
(same info as Ka’ana Kitchen above)

A side note: We tried a new restaurant in Paia called “Jazoo”. Their ad states, “Evolving Pacific flavors with a little Seoul.”
We were meeting friends there, and found it exceedingly noisy because there is no acoustic control with the tile floor, or on the ceiling. Also, their small plates were good but seemed overpriced for what we got. We had a big steak eater in the group and he was not happy. None of us were happy because we had to SHOUT to hear ourselves talk! I like to “dine,” I really hate the open kitchen concept. Which leads us to…

Best Ambience…
#1….
5 Palms
2960 S. Kihei Rd.
Kihei 879-2607
http://www.5Palmsrestaurant.com
(This is one of my very favorites during whale season, because the whales hang out right out front. Plus it’s got old-school half -round booths, which I love for their comfort factor.)

Honorable Mentions:

Merriman’s Kapalua
1 Bay Club Place
Kapalua. 669–6400

Mama’s Fish House
799 Poho Pl.

Best Appertizer:

Hali’imaile General Store (yes, it’s a restaurant. What won? The sashimi napoleon. Yum!)
900 Hali’imaile Rd.
Makawao… 572–2666

Honorable Mentions:

Ko
The Fairmont Kealani
4100 Wailea Alanui…875–2210

Lahaina Grill
127 Lahainaluna Rd.
Lahaina… 667–5117

We have eaten everywhere but Ko, Migrant (don’t care for Filipino food) and the two new ones at (the also new) Andaz Maui Hotel. We hear they are very expensive. Hands-down, our ultimate favorite is always Mamas Fish House. If you’re planning a vacation here, make that restaurant reservation plenty early! Just be prepared for the prices.

  1. You are probably so tired of my comments, but I’m finding I am able to connect with a few things you post about!

We have a fantastic concierge at our Maui total, and we have enjoyed a couple of these restaurants that are mentioned here. On this trip we’ve been to Mama’s Fish House and Merriman’s. Tonight is our date night and a babysitter is coming. We are going back to Merriman’s again since we loved it so much for early evening cocktails and then to dinner at Lahaina Grill. We plan on asking the bartender to make a lilikoi martini like you posted!

    • Aloha Cynthia,
No, not even close to tired of your comments. I’m just honored that you took the time to read the entire blog! I’m glad you’ve gotten some good out of it… How did the lilikoi martini turn out?
      Aloha, Jamaica

  2. Oops, I just noticed a typo in my post above. It should read Maui hotel, not Maui total. I did finish the blog, and I subscribed to receive all future posts.

Lahaina Grill has a wonderful lilikoi margarita on the drink menu, so we decided to go with that instead of asking for a martini. We liked that it was served in a martini glass. It was incredibly delicious. I do have pictures of the lilikoi margarita. Is there a way I can post them here? The meal was beyond incredible. I know we will be returning to Maui again in the future so we can experience the delicious food and excellent service at Lahaina Grill!

I told a few of the staff here at our hotel that I’ve discovered your wonderful blog and how much I’ve enjoyed reading it. They are impressed with how much I’ve learned about real living on Maui vs. vacationing in Maui. I also mentioned you like to hear from locals, so I hope they do visit and comment on your blog.

Sadly, today is our last full day here on Maui. This morning we hiked to the tide pools below our resort as we do almost daily to get a bit of exercise. Afterward we went kayaking. Later we have a photo shoot and we are crossing our fingers for a beautiful sunset. Then it will be our final dinner out in Maui….for this trip. I’m dreading our airplane trip back to LAX tomorrow evening.

    Aloha,

    Cynthia

    • Aloha Cynthia,
I’m so glad you and your family had a good time on Maui, and hope that you can return again soon. What is the most memorable thing you did on the island? And where will you have dinner tonight? Favorite restaurant?

Thank you so much for sharing with the people at the hotel how much you liked the blog. If you’d like to tell people back in LA about it too, I would be grateful! I have some nice mauidailyescape.com business cards I could mail you…

Again, thank you for reading so avidly. I really think you take the prize for having read the entire blog so quickly. And I REALLY appreciate all of your comments and feedback.

Let me know when you’re heading back to Maui, and I’ll let you know if there’s anything new here, or any new restaurants. Have a safe trip home!

      Warm Aloha, Jamaica

  3. For our last dinner in Maui, we opted to go to Sansei for sushi. We loved it! As for my most memorable thing we did was the helicopter ride. It was truly extrordinarily beautiful. I loved that we got to fly over and see Molokai. What an an amazing experience we’ll never forget. Over all my favorite restaurant was Merriman’s. It was so good we had to go back again. That view and the delicious food made a significant impression on us. I miss Maui!
