All Beds Are Full

Aloha!

A flu epidemic has hit Hawaii and a week ago we were told that all the hospital beds on Oahu are full. They are turning away ambulances, which are not allowed to stop.

And now comes the news that the beds are also all full at Maui Memorial Hospital. People are being told to just go see their primary physician instead. Which would be okay…except that Kaiser is on strike. And if people are dehydrated, they’re gonna need an IV.

I’ve got the flu. That’s why you haven’t heard from me. Everyone says this one lingers.

On a recent business call a woman on the East coast said, “You mean they get sick in the islands?!”

See you later!

  1. Oh no! Thinking of you. I hope you get better soon.

I miss Maui. I honestly think of it daily. I have one of our professional photos from our trip to Maui as the wallpaper on my iPhone.

  2. Oh yeah, it lingers all right. I’m on my 2nd month with it, and just when I think I’m over it, the cough returns. Soak up the sun there for your vitamin D, and eat your oranges and lemons for your vitamin C — and take some “vitamin sea” baths as well! Here in chilly inversion-socked Idaho, it’s difficult to get the above-mentioned remedies. Even my cat has a lingering respiratory virus (as he’s cuddled up next to me, wheezing through his stuffy sinuses). The good news is that once we all make it through this flu season, our immune systems will be all tuned up!

    • Aloha Shannon,
Sorry to here you’re socked-in there. Hope you can make it back to Maui soon! This last flu is the throw-up kind, which has just been no fun at all. That’s the epidemic now.
Nice to hear from you. Hang in there. Hope you can sell your house this spring.
      Aloha, Jamaica

  3. I’m sorry to hear so many people are ill from the flu, including yourself. I hope recovery and great health returns soon. I know we have never met but I feel a special connection to you and the people of Maui through your words. Take care and drink plenty of water.

  4. Sorry to hear your sick, hope your better soon, I still think it might be better to be sick in Maui then well in Mid Missouri during February. It’s overcast and cold here and I miss the sunshine. I had to watch the “Descendants” AGAIN last week just to see the islands, even if it was only on the TV. But then watching George Clooney is always nice. Take care
    and be better soon. Betty

    • Aloha Betty,
Thanks for writing. I hear you about watching “The Descendents.” That movie was just like a valentine to the state of Hawaii.

Hope you haven’t gotten hit by too much snow….
      Aloha, Jamaica
